Volleyball Sportsmanship Award

On Tues. evening, May 21st, the St. Anne’s CYO 6th grade Volleyball team was awarded the Sportsmanship Award from the Nassau Suffolk CYO in a ceremony at Sacred Heart Academy in Hempstead.

This is the highest award given by CYO and is based on the votes of the coaches of the other teams we competed against.

For most of these young women, this was their first experience playing Volleyball at a competitive level. They displayed great spirit, terrific sportsmanship and were a proud representative of St. Anne’s.

The team members are

Nicole Grueneberg
Rosie Lynch
Lucy Ambach
Marin Murphy
Krista Gliszczynski
Zara Figliozzi
Clare Owens
Carmel McAuliffe
Alex Aho
Claire Castellano
Mary Keane
Katie O’Connor
Fiona Walsh
Jamie Torres
Jess Toscano

They were ably assisted by our two Volunteer Coaches, Katie McGoldrick and Jillian McManaman, both St. Anne’s School graduates currently attending Sacred Heart Academy. Katie and Jillian were not only knowledgeable teachers about the game but wonderful role models for the girls.

The team would especially like to thank all our parents who not only transported the girls around Nassau County but who readily stepped up to volunteer for scorekeeping and line judging at the games.

We would also like to thank Maria Balsamo, St. Anne’s CYO Volleyball Coordinator, who organizes a terrific program based on her love of the game. Maria helped us get the team off the ground. We would like to also thank Tom Huggard, who in addition to coaching his own St. Anne’s and Bishop Kellenberg Volleyball teams, lent a new team and its coaches his extensive coaching experience.

Serve it up, St. Anne’s, serve it up!
