6th Grade Boys Basketball “A” Division Champions!

Wow! What a championship game! That was easily the best game the St. Anne’s boys played in the past two years. They were peaking at the perfect time starting with against St. Agnes in the semifinals and St. Martin’s in the finals. St. Anne’s was very well prepared for any kind of defense St. Martin’s threw at us. St. Anne’s played a ‘good’ first half both offensively and defensively, but needed to cut out the ticky-tack fouls. Martin’s scored 14-31 of their first half points from the foul line (good for them for making them all). We knew at halftime something needed to be adjusted on the offense against their high 3-2 zone to get to the hoop. As much as us coaches would like to say that we gave them a Lombardi halftime speech, we did not. We calmed the boys down and told them that there was plenty of game left and all we needed was one mini run and we were back in the game. The boys made us look good by making up the 9 point deficit in the first minute and a half. We had switched our zone offense up to a motion to get the ball moving and that makes us attack the hoop to open up driving/shooting lanes. We played our best basketball in the second half and every kid made a difference. We played cleaner defense, drove to the hoop, everyone was rebounding and making foul shots. It was such an exciting, back and forth 4th quarter with St. Anne’s bringing the championship trophy home for the second straight year. Thank you so much to all of you parents for everything that you have done this year: keeping a detailed scorers’ book, working the scoreboard, and always bringing your son to practices and games on time. Without your dedication we may not have had that incredible opportunity. Ryan, Dan and myself are always talking about what an unselfish group of boys they are. They pay attention in practice, execute during the game, and never give up when they face adversity. I know it is just as fun for us coaches as it is for the boys playing the game. Thank you parents again for an incredible year of basketball. Back to back CYO ‘A’ league champions!
