Saint Anne’s 5th Grade Boys Win the Nassau Suffolk Basketball Division A Championship in Triple OT!

Coach Joe Scattareggia’s team defeated a talented St. Pius squad to win a thrilling final in triple overtime. The Saint Anne’s boys began the game with relentless defense by Jack Schmatz, Andrew Scattareggia, Kyle Wood, Joey Wood and Brendan Staub. Brendan Staub took care of the early scoring with a string of 8 points to put Saint Anne’s up 8-0. St. Pius battled back to close the gap to a point. Coach Scattareggia then brought in reinforcements Danny Macchiarola, Michael Miller, Luke Paskewicz and Jack Barker and St. Anne’s once again extended its lead to 7 before taking a 5 point halftime lead. Saint Anne’s remained in control as the game wound down, but St. Pius would not go down without a fight. With 4.8 seconds left, St. Pius drove the court and scored a three point play to tie the game. The first overtime was uneventful, but that changed dramatically in the second overtime. Saint Anne’s found itself down by 1 with 10 seconds left when Connor Brock (unable to play due to injury) helped fire up the team from the bench. Joey Wood then drove to the basket and released a floater that dropped through the net as he was knocked to the ground by the collapsing defense. While he missed his free throw, Joey chased down his own miss and fired to a pass to Andrew Scattareggia who was fouled with 1.2 seconds left. Andrew sank one of two free throws for a two point lead. As appears to be their habit, St. Pius would not go down easily. They brought the ball up to half court with the clock starting as St. Pius crossed half court. Then right before the horn sounded St. Pius launched a 40 foot shot that clanked off the backboard and in to tie the game at 31. The tension in the building was unbearable as Joey Wood began the scoring in the third OT by launching a three-point range shot that ripped through the next for a two point lead. Figuring that was a good way to go Joey hit the same shot again and again and again for an 8 point lead! That closed out the scoring for 39-31 Saint Anne’s victory.
